Sweetly Defined first landed on my radar just before the COVID-19 lockdown clamped down. Back then, optimism prevailed, and the economy wasn’t a constant joke. Everyone in town was talking about their food, and I knew I had to try it.
However, it took me a while to finally visit. My first attempt in 2023 ended in a comical detour. Mistakenly venturing to the wrong Akamwesi Mall in Nakawa, I ended up grabbing a forgettable bite at a nearby eatery, my hunger overriding my determination.
Last Saturday, I decided to put an end to my procrastination and embarked on the journey to Kyebando. The anticipation of finally experiencing Sweetly Defined, the source of much excitement, was palpable.
My braced-for-long-haul drive turned out to be a breeze. Akamwesi Mall, far grander than its Nakawa counterpart, loomed just off the bypass. Sweetly Defined, seemingly the centerpiece of the entire structure, occupied the ground floor. The welcoming staff ensured I wouldn’t miss the entrance.
As I was ushered in, the sheer size of the restaurant overwhelmed me. “Inside or outside?” inquired the attendant.
“Outside?” I echoed, surprised, “There’s more?”
Indeed, there was. A charming terrace with a leafy pavilion beckoned. This was the perfect spot.
The waiting staff arrived with a flourish, presenting not one but two menus. The impressive drinks menu showcased a meticulous dedication to coffee and tea offerings. The sheer amount of detail alone was astonishing. The food menu, however, was a revelation – a tome filled with the most mouthwatering and diverse descriptions I had ever encountered. It was undoubtedly the most detailed and expansive menu I had seen in Kampala.
From starters and confectioneries to soups, continental dishes, Indian delicacies, Chinese specialties, Italian fare, pizzas, barbecue platters, and an array of baked goods, the menu left me speechless. The dessert section, a luxurious display of sinfully delicious options, boasted everything from ice cream and gelato to Italian classics like tiramisu. Even the kid’s menu offered enticing combos, each with a bonus scoop of ice cream.
After a rough week, this decadent spread felt well-deserved. Though I already had a craving in mind, I secretly vowed to one day conquer the entire menu, one blissful Saturday at a time.
For now, my order included:
- Starter: Pumpkin Soup and Garlic Bread with Pineapple Mint Juice
- Main Course: Honey Glazed Pork Ribs (a personal challenge, as I often make them at home and was curious to see how they measured up) served with potato mash and vegetables
- Dessert 1: Mocha Coffee and Ginger Cookies
- Dessert 2: Tiramisu
- Dessert 3: Red Velvet Cake Slice (to be enjoyed later)
Sweetly Defined: A Culinary Gem Worth Experiencing

A Feast for the Foodie
The menu at Sweetly Defined is an explosion of flavor, offering a variety of cuisines to satisfy any craving. The succulent ribs, perfectly marinated and glazed, are a standout, paired with a beautifully presented mashed potato “rose bush.” Even the salad showcases a chef who understands the importance of fresh, delicious vegetables. The in-house bakery ensures warm, buttery garlic bread and a rich, creamy pumpkin soup. Don’t miss the Moca Coffee, a unique twist on the classic beverage, and the decadent ginger cookies – they’re so good, you might just ask for a doggie bag (and get four extras!).

Spacious Comfort and Attentive Service
Step into Sweetly Defined and breathe easy. The spacious layout, with ample light and airflow, creates a relaxed atmosphere. The terrace is a particularly cool haven thanks to the surrounding plant life. The service is efficient and friendly, with staff who are clearly invested in the restaurant’s success. Their uniforms are clean and stylish, and their movements exude professionalism. The management’s commitment to staff development is evident, fostering an upwardly mobile environment where many pursue further education alongside their work.
While the service might not quite reach the ruthlessly high standards of the Sheraton Kampala, it’s on track for excellence.

Beyond the Plate
Sweetly Defined goes beyond simply serving food. The focus on fresh, organic ingredients prepared on-site allows for customization to your dietary needs. The large, off-limits kitchen fuels the wholesome meals offered, while the bakery provides a delightful selection of nutritious and delicious breads and cakes. Dr. Barbara Kirunda Tabusibwa, the proprietor with a background in public health and nutrition, brings that expertise directly to the menu.
The clean and spacious bathrooms and the emphasis on a family-friendly atmosphere further elevate the dining experience. The décor is cultured and unique, with carefully curated plants and woodwork adding a touch of sophistication. The Wi-Fi is reliable and fast, a crucial amenity for today’s diners.
Sweetly Defined: A Reflection of its Owners
One can’t help but notice the staff’s attentiveness and energy. It reflects the core values of the restaurant’s proprietors, Dr. Eric Tabusibwa and Dr. Barbara Kirunda Tabusibwa – innovation, discipline, systems, and wholesomeness. The calming Christian music on the overhead speakers blends seamlessly with the aroma of freshly baked bread, spices, and the enticing offerings on the menu.
Final Bite
Regrettably, my visit ended without indulging in the gelato – a compelling reason to return, of course. But would I recommend Sweetly Defined? Absolutely! Samantha Akello, an articulate member of the marketing team, perfectly summed it up: “We don’t compromise on quality… Each meal, each very bite, is intended to be an experience.”
Sweetly Defined is located on the ground floor of Akamwesi Mall, Kyebando, with a new branch opening this month at Metroplex Mall in Naalya.
